The basic form is the form the verb is listed as in the dictionary.  The main verb in every clause is what the subject of the clause does or feels.   

Loan is reading.

Reading is the main verb.  

The main verb of each clause is written in red.

Read is the basic form..

The basic form of each verb is written in blue.

Study the following verbs.

I am a seamstress.  What is your occupation?  be
Joe went to the store. go
to New York in 1995.  move
Huang saw the shore of Lake Michigan from the airplane.  see
The instructor told the student to study for the exam.  tell
You were a young child when I was in Vietnam.  be
The guests didn't eat all the food at the party, so we ate it the next day.  eat
I  have written a note to my son's teacher.  write
Susan read that book last summer.  read
I'll send my father an e-mail today.  send
We've played tennis together for ten years.  play
The class has been working on the project for a long time.  work
John plans to buy a new digital camera.  plan
