There are currently approximately 5,000 languages in the world.  Many of these languages are quickly disappearing and are being replaced by some of the languages of commerce marked on the map.  English is currently the most important language of commerce. All languages have ways of indicating what function each word serves in a clause.  In many languages, these functions (case, number, gender) are indicated by  morphemes that are added to the words.  In English, the function of each word is indicated by its word order in the clause.
